The LSYO Concerto Competition is held every season and is open to members of the Symphonic Orchestra. The winner performs a movement of a concerto with the Symphonic Orchestra at the Spring Concert.

Each season’s specific deadlines and notification dates for each step of the Concerto Competition will be shared in Google Classroom and by email.  Generally the timeline for the Concerto Competition proceeds as follows:

1. Registration:  Musicians need to send the name of their piece, the composer, and which movement they will be playing to the Conductor, usually by the end of September.
2. Approval:  The Conductor will review submissions and make sure that the orchestration for each piece is available and manageable for the orchestra. Submissions will be approved or denied approximately one week after the registration deadline.  If a piece/movement is denied, the musician will have another full week to propose an alternate audition piece.
3. Pre-Screening:  This step usually takes place in November.  A recording of the musician playing their entire movement is due via email. Recording with an accompanist is strongly encouraged but is not mandatory for this round of the concerto competition. The Conductor will contact the musicians approximately 1-2 weeks after pre-screening to share whether or not they have been selected to move on to the next round of live auditions.  All musicians will be provided with feedback based on their submissions, regardless of a live audition invitation.
4. Live Audition:  Finalists will be called in for a live audition in mid-January. Performing at the live audition with an accompanist is strongly encouraged but not required.   Concert dress is not required, but please wear something nice.
